大象视频Views: Biden Administration Tackles Financial Strains on Healthcare Consumers
The Biden administration鈥檚 efforts to address financial strains on healthcare consumers are the subject of a new blog post by 大象视频Director Robert Otto Valdez, Ph.D., M.H.S.A. Americans have long faced a healthcare affordability crisis. Between 2016 and 2020, Dr. Valdez notes, healthcare prices increased at roughly double the rate of inflation. At the root of these price increases are misaligned incentives across the healthcare ecosystem. A recent 大象视频 published in Health Affairs explores these issues and the pressures that can lead to prolonged medical debt and force some consumers to go without medical services. The study can help policymakers and the healthcare industry confront issues contributing to medical care's financial strain. Access the blog post. To receive all blog posts, .
Making Healthcare Safer IV Report Launched With Three Evidence Reviews
New evidence reviews from 大象视频are available to help healthcare leaders prioritize and implement strategies to improve patient safety in three areas: , and the use of . The reviews are part of the agency鈥檚 Making Healthcare Safer IV report, a continuous updating of patient safety harms and practices. First published in 2001, Making Healthcare Safer reports have served as consolidated information sources for healthcare providers, health system administrators, researchers and government agencies. In coming months, Making Healthcare Safer IV will provide evidence on 11 additional safety topics, including reducing adverse events related to anticoagulants, opioid stewardship and addressing fatigue and sleepiness of clinicians due to hours of service.
COVID-19 Surges Strained Hospitals, 大象视频Study Finds
Surges in COVID-19 that strained hospital emergency departments led to a decline in inpatient occupancy, an 大象视频study found. 大象视频researchers, writing in JAMA Health Forum, analyzed 2019 and 2020 data from 础贬搁蚕鈥檚 and found that during weeks with low COVID-19 admission rates, inpatient occupancy decreased by 12.7 percent. However, during weeks with high COVID-19 admission rates, inpatient occupancy rates increased by 7.9 percent. Intensive care unit occupancy rates were even more affected, increasing by 67.8 percent during weeks with high COVID-19 admissions. During weeks with high COVID-19 admissions, occupancy declined for many service lines, with occupancy by surgical patients declining 43.1 percent early in the pandemic. The authors noted that these fluctuations in occupancy may have affected quality of care and hospital finances. They also noted that the results highlight the importance of policies that provided financial aid or deployed resources (including equipment and staff) to hospitals during the pandemic. Access the .
Machine Learning No Better Than Traditional Models in Predicting Intensive Care Unit Fluid Overload
Machine learning seems to be no better than traditional regression modeling in predicting fluid overload for patients in the intensive care unit, an AHRQ-funded study found. Machine learning, also known as predictive analytics, is a field of study within artificial intelligence powered by the use of statistical algorithms. In the study, published in Scientific Reports, researchers compared the ability of traditional regression techniques and different machine learning-based modeling approaches to identify clinically meaningful fluid overload predictors. Fluid overload is a frequent and unintended consequence of resuscitation in critically ill adults. Machine learning models have outperformed traditional regression models in a variety of settings but generated only a similar predictive power to traditional regression modeling to identify patients with fluid overload.
